Language and Society Discussion (LSD) Group
A Sociolinguistics forum for students and faculty at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign
In LSD, we engage in lively discussions based on a variety of readings in Sociolinguistics. Students to gain a more thorough knowledge of topics and issues that are currently being brought to the forefront in the field of Sociolinguistics in a supportive and fun environment.
Readings are typically drawn from recent issues of Journal of Sociolinguistics, Language and Society, Discourse Studies, Discourse and Society, Applied Linguistics, as well as many other journals that focus on issues including language ideology, identity, ethnicity, politics, language in the media, institutional language use, and more. Students are also encouraged to present their original work or work in progress.
LSD meets weekly for one hour throughout the fall and spring semesters. Weekly meetings are typically held on Wednesdays from 12-1, although time and location may vary by semester.
